Led Zeppelin and the Evolution of Music

Led Zeppelin Rocks

I love Led Zeppelin. Good times, bad times, you know I’ve had my share! Man… I still remember my first religious Zeppelin experience like it was yesterday. I was sitting with my pant legs rolled up and my feet in the pool at the Alpine Inn while on my first trip to Disneyland. My mother had let both me and Katy purchase one album each for the trip, and I chose Led Zeppelin’s BBC Sessions. This was 1998, so I was rockin’ a portable CD player with huge, bulky headphones that did a pretty good job of cancelling out most outside noise. As I sat there watching a Disneyland bound family unload their luggage, I came to realize how fucking beautiful and sexually immersive Led Zeppelin really is. Now, I don’t usually get moved by music, but that shit was intense. I had never heard someone with so much emotion in their voice or a guitar player with so much passion in their playing. As soon as I got back from Disneyland, I went on a Zeppelin frenzy! I couldn’t get enough. I don’t fully understand why their music affects me so much, but it does and I love it.

I also love this article on passion by the always brilliant Sydney Owen. Here’s how it begins:

Quit your day job.

Leave the 9-5.

Get out of your cubicle/office/four walls of whatever organization you work with.

Live the free life! Bounce from coffee shop to coffee shop, bookstore to bookstore, library to library!

Be free!

Be an entrepreneur.

SHUT UP.

Seriously – I’m over it. Passion is not limited to entrepreneurship. Doing good work, enjoying your life, and making a difference is not limited to those who start their own business.

Tell it, sister! In the industry I’m in, I hear those buzz phrases way the fuck too often. Finally, someone stood up for those of us who would like nothing more than to work the Monday to Friday, 9 to 5 shift as an employee. The idea of entrepreneurship sounds stressful, tiring, draining, and not fun at all. Yes… people who can do it are awesome and very important, but it’s not the pinnacle of success or happiness. I don’t like work. Some people do… I don’t. I doubt I’ll ever really fully enjoy working. It is for this reason that I just want a job that I go to… do my work… and leave. I don’t want to have to think about it when I’m not there. I don’t want to become invested in it. I don’t want to be tied down. Again… this is why I liked Walmart and why I like my current job so much. When I am not at work… I don’t think about work. I go, I do my job, and leave. It’s kinda weird that I used to be so into capitalism (see: Ayn Rand) since I hate working so much. I don’t make any sense.

Okay, so a few posts back was the DJ Adam’s Muzak Pix Volume Thirty post. I’ve been making myself these silly little compilations since high school. I’ve decided on a new way to make them. Starting with v31, I will only change one track from the previous volume. I like this as it’ll become an evolving, improving playlist. I believe that by v50 I will have manually evolved the greatest and most perfect playlist known to the human race. You are not prepared.
